Every fall, thousands of sandhill cranes use the sandbars and islands in the Wisconsin River for staging prior to migration. At this brown bag seminar, photographer Greg Dixon will share the photos he took and the experiences he had during the gathering of these spectacular birds last fall.
Greg took his photographs in December 2016 from some new crane blinds installed on the north shore of the Wisconsin River and the south shore of the Aldo Leopold Foundation property.
During his presentation, Greg will discuss how he goes about photographing wild animals — including equipment and technical considerations, and considerations of the animals themselves. His talk will be informal, giving people a chance to ask questions about equipment, photo processing, and the experience of working as a professional photographer. He also will bring his photo gear and give people the opportunity to handle cameras and ask more questions.
A freelance photographer based in Madison, WI, Greg photographs sports and news for the Wisconsin State Journal and other newspapers. Greg also takes photos of wildlife and natural landscapes in national parks, such as Yellowstone, and in wilderness areas in Wisconsin and throughout the world. Greg’s photos have appeared in magazines published as far away as Australia. He also sells his nature photos as fine art prints, often directly to people he meets during his travels.
Greg’s degree in psychology involved research with wild monkeys in the Kibale Forest in Uganda. It was there, in the rain forest of East Africa, that he decided to pursue his lifelong love of photography.
